Susan Marie Sloan

Susan Marie Sloan, 56, of Tooele, Utah, passed away on October 6, 2023, after an 18-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family and will be missed.

Sue was born to Robert and Mary Wilms on October 20, 1966, in Elgin, Illinois, where she grew up with her two sisters, Tracey and Roberta. In 1985, she met Michael Sloan and together were married at St Paul’s United Church of Christ in Elgin, Illinois in August of 1986. Together they had three beautiful daughters, Ashley, Emily, and Cassandra.

In 1997, after vacationing in the mountains of Utah, the family moved from Illinois to Utah. Sue loved living in Utah and enjoyed being in the mountains.

Sue enjoyed doing crafts and was a gifted artist who loved sharing her passion with others. She started a YouTube channel called SuesMandalas, with over 31,000 followers, producing hundreds of tutorials for others to learn Dot Mandala Painting. She found great comfort and serenity in painting during her fight with cancer and other health problems and decided she wanted to help others feel that comfort during their struggles.

During her years of fighting Vulvar Cancer, she felt it was her mission to educate and spread the word to other women who might be struggling with the same types of symptoms she had and hopefully assist them in finding the proper diagnosis and treatment sooner than she did. She would tell others if you were having any kind of problem see a Gynecological Oncologist immediately.

Sue was preceded in death by her father, Robert Wilms, her sister, Tracey Wilms, and her nephew Eric Luna.

Sue is survived by her husband of 38 years Michael, her three daughters, Ashley (James, Emily), Emily (Martin), Cassandra, and stepson Michael. Her Mother Mary Wilms and her sister Roberta Luna. Her grandchildren, who filled her heart with love, Jonathan, Seth, Vincent, Samantha, Connor, Alyson, Eric, and Ky, and several nieces, and nephews.

Our Family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Kate Harris, from Huntsman Cancer Institute, for her love, compassion, care, and friendship in treating Sue. Words cannot describe the love and appreciation we feel for you.

Thank you to the nurses and staff at Huntsman Cancer Institute for making us feel like family and not just a patient. Your patience, support, and guidance kept our family going for years.

Thank you to Huntsman at Home and CNS Hospice Care for your help and concern in Sues final journey. You allowed us to spend time with Sue and understand what was happening.

Our Hospice Nurse, Merrilly, guided our choices and gave us the honest answers we did not always want to hear, but needed to hear to make Sues transition at the end as painless and peaceful as possible. She stayed with Sue till the end, making sure she was comfortable.

Mike & girls, It was a privilege to know Sue. We connected via email during the pandemic and shared a love for our puzzle hobby (I found her through her puzzle channel/SuesPuzzles first and didn’ t even know about her dot channel till later) . We found that we had a lot in common and emailed often. I am honored to have gotten to know her.. One thing for certain, she LOVED her family, 110 percent. And, she loved you, Mike. We would say we both were blessed with wonderful husbands. She loved you and her kids/grandkids like no other. She was always so positive, even when faced with her health issues. Put your hope, strength and faith in Christ now. Let Him comfort you all and know that one day, those of us that believe and trust in Him as our Savior will see each other again. Our time here is so short.. God bless you and the girls/your family. Margaret

My condolences to Sue’s family. This has to be so hard. I am a devoted follower of Sue on YouTube. I found her probably within her first 10 videos published. Her art was always an inspiration to me and even more so when l found out she was battling cancer. She definitely made an impact on me. I hope she’s still creating beauty where she is now.

Sue was such a godsend. Her goodbye video was recommended to me and I viewed it as her artwork was lovely. Little did I know she was an answer to prayers as I am undergoing “lady part” tumor issues and just had my first surgery. She was the inspiration and comfort that I needed. I’m so enjoying getting to know her through her videos and as a crafter I plan on working through her dot mandala tutorials. Praying for all of you.

I accidentally came across your YouTube channel tonight and I have been crying ever since. I have since spent the past hour watching you create gorgeous art and hear how uplifting and strong you were. Gosh. I feel so lucky that I got to read your life story in this obituary and that I got to see your loving face and hear your voice on YouTube when you said goodbye. I have never seen painting such as yours. I think can do it with patience and practice and with YOU as my teacher. I have just “subscribed” to your channel… sadly, 2 weeks after your passing. In your honor, I am going to learn to paint with you, starting at your beginning videos. Sadly…. In this life, nobody gets out of here alive. I’ve been a RN for 29 years and I’m only 1 year younger than you. I plan to keep sharing kindness and spreading love to others~ until it is MY turn to go. Much respect, Kimberly Baum Columbia Station , Ohio (a rural suburb of Cleveland) ❤🙏 ❤

I am so sorry for your loss. I am one of the many people who has found her goodbye video randomly on YouTube.May she rest in peace. I wish you all a lot of strength during this time and the time that still has to come.

  • Brandon Posted December 16, 2023 4:37 pm

Sue’s brief video saying goodbye made quite an impact. It may not have been her choice, her wish or her desire for her imminent passing to be a beacon of light to so many, but fate had decided that it should be. So many people saw that video, myself included, and were forced to stare mortality in the eyes. We often forget our time here is not beyond measure or unending, and as such, we take all of it for granted. Through Sue’s experience, we’ve all been gently reminded to make the most of our time and make the best of who and what we are. I hope those who knew her in life and those of us who know her through death take a moment to thank Sue for some much-needed enlightenment. So… thank you, Sue. I wish you could know how many of us stopped to pay respect. I hope you know peace now in a way that none of us could hope to in life.
