Steven Samuel Berry
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother Steve S. Berry, who left us too soon. Steve passed away on August 29, 2026. He died suddenly, during a lightning and thunder storm in Salt Lake City. Steve had not been feeling well for the last year or so of his life. He died of natural causes.
Steve was born on January 27, 1959, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the seventh and middle child of Kenneth and Fanny Berry. The first years of his life the family lived in Bluffdale; his remaining growing up years were in Kearns. Some of Steve’s favorite memories were visiting Grandparents and Great Grandparents in Circleville and Springdale, Utah. This is where he fell in love with Zion National Park and later in life would travel there yearly.
Steve lived most of his adult years in Salt Lake City, working for Maxfield Candy as well as other jobs. He then worked for 15 years as a driver and life enrichment assistant for a senior living community. He spent the last few years working for a substance residential rehab center as a driver.
He loved Musical Theater. Earlier in life he spent 10 years involved in community theater as an actor on stage; a set designer; a stage manager; and an employee of the theater. As life changed, he was no longer able to work in the theater, he never lost his love of it and tried to see as many local and Broadway touring companies that came through town.
Steve was in the closet for many years and finally came out late in life. He wanted to thank those who stood by him as he made the transition, especially his friends Heather and Amanda.
Although Steve leaves behind no children of his own, he grew up in a very large family and is survived by many brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews, too many to list here. He was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, David.
Steve has requested there be no funeral and desires his ashes to be scattered at his favorite place in Utah, Zion National Park. Steve had planned a trip to Zion in November – the family will honor that date to scatter his remains. The family wishes to honor Steve with a memorial-celebration of life, to be held October 9, 2026 at the Taylorsville Stake Center 3495 West 4850 South. Memorial will begin at 5:30 pm in the Relief Society room, followed by a dinner in the cultural hall. Family and friends are invited to attend and share their memories of Steve.
Steve wrote in a note to the family: “John Muir said, ‘Going to the mountains is going home.’ Now, when I take my trips to Zion, it feels like I’m going home – Steve”
