Obituary of KIrk L. Olsen

In Loving Memory of Kirk Leander Olsen
February 3, 1962 – October 21, 2026
Kirk Leander Olsen was born on February 3, 1962, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Elizabeth and Bryant Olsen, who preceded him in death. On October 21, 2026, Kirk passed away at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, leaving behind a family who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Kirk was a one-of-a-kind soul with a goofy personality, a love for the outdoors, and a special way of bringing laughter and joy to the people around him. He loved camping, fishing, and spending time outside with his family. Some of life’s best moments for Kirk were the simple ones: being outdoors, making memories, sharing laughs, and enjoying time with the people he loved.
But if there was one role that held a particularly special place in Kirk’s heart, it was being a grandpa.
Kirk had a special bond with his grandchildren and loved making them happy. He was the kind of grandpa who wanted to do whatever the grandkids wanted to do. Their wishes became his plans, their happiness brought him joy, and time spent with them was precious to him. Whether it meant going on an adventure, enjoying the outdoors, or simply doing whatever made them smile, Kirk was happiest when he could make a memory with them.
His goofy nature, playful spirit, and willingness to make time for his grandchildren created a connection that will live on long after his passing. The memories they shared will become treasured stories, told and retold through the years, reminding them of a grandpa who loved them in his own special way.
Throughout his life, Kirk experienced the joys and changes that come with family and relationships. He was married to Lorraine Olsen, with whom he welcomed four children: Jacque, Daniel, Jacob, and Stephanie. Following their divorce, he had two children with Sheila Lortcher: Dustin and Felicia. He later married Stacy Butzlaff, with whom he had two children: Ashley and Cody.
Kirk later married Pam Barrett, who had six children of her own: Jessica, Jake, Jacinda, Jennifer, Julianne, and Jeremy. Although Kirk and Pam eventually divorced, the blended family they shared remains part of his story and legacy. Family connections can extend beyond marriage, and the bonds created along life’s journey remain a meaningful part of the family they became.
Kirk is survived by his brother, Kyle Olsen; his eight children, Jacque, Daniel, Jacob, Stephanie, Dustin, Felicia, Ashley, and Cody; his beloved grandchildren, who held such a special place in his heart; Pam’s six children, who were part of the blended family they shared; and extended family and loved ones whose lives were touched by him. His parents, Elizabeth and Bryant Olsen, preceded him in death.
Kirk’s life was about more than dates and milestones. It was about the laughter he shared, the adventures he enjoyed, the family memories he helped create, and the love he gave in his own way. His legacy will live on in his children, grandchildren, and all those who remember his humor, his love of the outdoors, and the moments they were fortunate enough to share with him.
Though saying goodbye is never easy, Kirk leaves behind memories that cannot be taken away. His grandchildren will carry stories of their goofy grandpa, of time spent together, and of someone who wanted nothing more than to see them happy. Those memories will remain a part of them for the rest of their lives.

  1. Thank you for everything you did for my kids. They each have such special memories of you. They still talk about the projects you did together, like the Egyptian project and the Rube Goldberg contraption, as well as camping, fishing, and our epic water and food fights.

From Barney, pickles, and cheese, to everything else— a bond that was unbreakable there.

Family is family… We shared great laughs, fantastic political debates every Sunday, and some tears along the way, too. Rest in Peace, Turkey. Take care of Ace for me until I get there. I love you.
