Obituary of Dennis A Clegg

Dennis A Clegg passed away on August 24, 2025 at the age of 96. Dennis was born on June 27, 1929, in Heber, Utah, on the first wedding anniversary of his parents, Almon Giles and Geneva Denison Clegg. He was the oldest of six children. From ages two to seven, he and his parents lived in the home of his great-grandmother, Margaret Ann Griffiths Clegg, who had crossed the plains with the ill-fated Martin Handcart Company. She passed away just a month after Dennis’s birth in July 1929.

Dennis attended Central Elementary School in Heber for grades 1-6, and completed grades 7-12 in the old school building where Heber City Park now stands. He graduated in 1947, excelling in music—singing in choirs and serving as first trumpet player in the band.

From 1949 to 1951, Dennis served a mission in the Texas–Louisiana Mission.

In 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Georgia Dawn Johnson (“Dawnie or Dawn”), after both had returned from their missions. Dennis was drafted into the Army in 1953 during the Korean War. He did basic training and was trained as a teletype operator at Camp San Luis Obispo, California. Rather than being sent to Korea, he was assigned to Heidelberg, Germany, with the U.S. occupation forces. Dawn was able to join him for the last year and a half of his service, and together they traveled throughout Western Europe. They returned home in May 1955 with their adopted baby daughter from Germany.

Dennis continued his education at Brigham Young University, earning a B.S. in Education in 1957 and later an M.S. in History and Geography in 1966. He began a 34-year teaching career at Wasatch Junior and Senior High Schools. Much of his teaching years were in the same building he attended as a teenager. With the help of family members, Dennis and Dawn built a home in Midway on a lot given to them by her parents as a wedding present, where they lived from 1957 until his passing.

He served on the Midway City Planning Commission and later on the City Council for 12 years. He was also president of the Midway Booster Club and the Wasco Credit Union. As a longtime member of the American Legion, he served as Bugler, sounding Taps at nearly 300 graveside services.

Dennis kept his love of farming, developed in childhood, and enjoyed gardening with Dawn each summer. He raised dairy cows for his family and later beef cattle to share with loved ones.

He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings, including counselor in the bishopric, high councilor, stake executive secretary, teacher, stake music chairman, ward music leader, and choir director. He especially loved the music callings.

Music was a lifelong passion. From playing trumpet in high school and singing bass in men’s choruses, he went on to direct ward choirs, sing with the Midway Swiss Chorus for over 50 years, play in the Midway Town Band, and perform with Dawn in the Midway Bell Choir for many years.

Together, Dennis and Dawn served as ordinance workers together in three temples—Provo, Mount Timpanogos, and Nauvoo—for 25 years (1993–2018). Dennis was also a sealer for 18 years (2004–2022). In 1998, they served a part-time LDS Employment Mission.

Dennis loved people and tried to minister with kindness. Above all, he cherished his sweetheart and eternal companion, Dawnie, and looked forward with joy to being reunited with her after her passing in 2018.

Dennis was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his brothers, Vern Clegg, Calvin Clegg and his wife Dorothy, and LaVar Clegg; a brother-in-law, Grant Misbach; and a grandson, Tyrin James. He is survived by his brother, Almon Clegg (Janis), his sister, Alene Misbach, sisters-in-law, Janice Clegg and Launa Clegg; his six children, Jeanine, Carol Dawn (Bill) Poulter, Keith (Carol), Melvin James, Jonathan (Julie), and James (Calleen); as well as 23 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express abundant appreciation to those who gave loving and tender care and service to Dad: Carl Berg, Nephi Jensen, Mark Lineback, and many neighbors and ward members, and Intermountain hospital in Heber and Intermountain hospice staff. We will be forever grateful for their love, kindness, and generous time.

Viewings will be held Friday, September 5, 6-8 pm and Saturday, September 6, 9:30-10:30 am both at the Deer Creek meetinghouse, 1102 South Center, Midway, Utah. Funeral services will follow at 11 am. Interment following the funeral service will be in the Midway Cemetery, Midway, Utah with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, please bless others with a donation to the Humanitarian Fund or Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  1. Clegg family,
I’m saddened to hear of your wonderful father’s passing. I am happy for him to be with Dawnie again.
He was such a great man and served many throughout the community. He would cut any wood project I had and I greatly appreciated it.
I have missed seeing him since I moved out of the county.
May the Lord bless and comfort you at this difficult time.
    💜 Debbie

  8. Uncle Dennis was a wonderful man. He was strong and dependable, like a rock. He was always so kind and made us laugh. He loved farming, but he loved his family even more. We are sad that he is gone, but we will always remember his big heart and all the good memories we have of him.

  9. What a wonderful man! I am so thankful for the opportunity I had to know him and his beautiful wife Georgia Dawn. They truly were great examples of a loving marriage and disciples of Christ.

  10. He was a wonderful brother. Like a patriarch to the family after our father and mother died. He will be remembered for his tender care for family matters. His passing cannot go without remembrance of his good wife whom he mourned for upon her passing. I’d like to present here my recollection of this sweet daughter of the heavenly father:

She was a wonderful person; full of enthusiasm for life. Always in search of things to do that would make the world a better place. Loved everyone she encountered including strangers and wanderers. She raised a large and endearing family and fed them with the bread of life including the best cookies and baked goods found on the earth. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is, truly, one in a million.

  11. Dennis was such an example and support throughout my life. He taught me Geography in Junior High and was a wonderful example of being a disciple from my boyhood forward. He was always thoughtful and kind. He and Georgia Dawn were truly partners and loved each other dearly. I remember them giving both my brother and I each a one hundred dollar bill when we left on our missions. But they didn’t just give it – they baked it in a beautiful hand-made cake, with the money wrapped in tin foil. They were both so generous and kind. I miss Georgia Dawn and will greatly miss Dennis. I enjoyed talking to him before and after church these latter years of his life. He was always so kind and welcoming. He loved his family and missed Georgia Dawn. It makes me happy to think of their joy at being reunited. My deepest condolences to the family. I love you and mourn with you.
