Obituary of Lloyd C. Felton, Jr

Lloyd Crosser Felton, Jr, age 72, passed away on April 6 at home in Salt Lake City, UT, after a long life full of hard work and dedication to family. He was born on April 20, 1953 in Cockeysville, Maryland to Caroline Beaumont Lycett and Lloyd Crosser Felton, Sr.

Lloyd’s love of rocks and the beauty of the earth started early and continued throughout his life. He received his Bachelors in Geology and minor in Theology from Hartwick College (Oneonta, NY) and went on to get his Masters in Geology from West Virginia University (Morgantown). He learned about rocks up and down the east coast, from the Bahamas up to Canada. Deciding to specialize in oil after graduation, he worked his way west. He became the foremost expert in the Uintah Basin oil fields and ultimately started his own Wellsite Geology Consulting company. He continued to work on oil rigs throughout the west and across the country until 2015. Everywhere he went, he found beauty in the rocks and glory in the earth, and often brought home souvenirs, even from a simple walk.

Lloyd’s love of the earth extended to wood and he consistently created beautiful and useful things with his hands. Having learned from his father in childhood, his woodworking brought him many adventures. He worked with his father-in-law to build and finish houses all over the valley. He and beloved wife Toni spent 11 months in Japan finishing homes with his incredible precision. His attention to detail and love of each piece of wood allowed him to harmonize different woods together into one-of-a-kind showpieces. He made such beautiful furniture that an art gallery wanted to display his pieces on consignment.

Lloyd had an extremely dedicated work ethic and was never not working. In addition to his career in geology, he owned and operated a ten-acre hobby farm when his children were young. He regularly picked up handyman jobs between wellsite commitments. After retiring from the oil field in 2015, he could not sit still and worked several different jobs over the years, eventually landing in security, first at the SLC airport and then at the University of Utah. He worked his last shift only two days before his passing, maintaining his dedication to good work until the end of his life.

He was a good man and touched many lives throughout his journey. Lloyd is survived by his wife of 38 years, Toni Sue Jones, daughter Caroline Beaumont, and son Lloyd Crosser Felton III, and by his two brothers John A. Felton (Owings Mills, MD), and Mark S. Felton, (Smithsburg, MD) and three sisters, Caroline B. Rastelli, (Fayetteville, AR), Margaret Felton Romanik (Staunton, VA), and Barbara J. Felton (Drexel Hill, PA).

A celebration of life will be held on April 20th from 4-6 pm at Little America.

We would love to know your memories of Lloyd. He had many different versions of himself, and we want to celebrate all of them together: https://tinyurl.com/MemoriesOfLloyd
