Obituary of Patty Kay Bingham

Patty Kay Smith Bingham returned to her Heavenly Father on June 4, 2026, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Patty was born September 2, 1957, alongside her twin brother, Perry, to Roy Estel Smith Jr. and Charlotte Ann Hulse. Patty grew up in Orem, Utah, the third of six children. With her first husband, Daniel Fetzer Bates, Patty was the mother of eight children before the couple divorced.

In 2007, Patty was sealed to the love of her life, Brandon Trevino Bingham, in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple. Patty loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. She had an unshakeable testimony of the Savior and His atonement that she readily shared with others through her faithful love and service. A devoted educator, Patty delighted in the time she spent with her students. She left a lasting impression on many young minds and instilled in them a lifelong love of learning. Her own education was incredibly important to Patty, and she continued to pursue knowledge throughout her life. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Brigham Young University. Later, Patty earned her Master of Education degree in curriculum and instruction from Weber State University, graduating in 2007. Above all, Patty adored spending time with her family. From chaotic Sunday dinners surrounded by her children to imaginative cousin Christmas parties for her grandchildren, she cherished every moment with her children and grandchildren. Patty was an example of Christ-like love and service, and she will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her beloved husband Brandon; her children, D. McKay (Shellie) Bates, Rebecca Bates, Michelle (Robert) Preston, Andreana (Ryan) Suprise, Caleb Bates, Janessa (Nathan) Marshall, and Douglas Bates; 19 grandchildren; her siblings, Mary (Mario) Padilla, Perry (Patricia) Smith, Steve (Sharon) Smith, and Janet (Michael) Sansone; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Kelly Smith, and her son Parley Bates.

A service honoring Patty’s life will be held at the Lake Point Stake Center (2005 Sunset Road, Lake Point, UT 84074) on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 11:00 am with a visitation prior from 9:30-10:30 am. Patty will be interred at the Lake Point Cemetery.

  4. Mrs. Bingham taught four of my five children at Overlake Elementary. I appreciated her insight and care for them. They each learned so much in her class. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones with hope for peace.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear of Patty’s passing. I have fond memories of her involvement in the Teaching American History grant (TAH) and our field studies. Deepest condolences, she will be missed.

  6. Aunt Patty continues to be one of my favorite people. She was impactful and so incredibly kind to me at several important times in my life, and I can see her influence in who I am now.

Unfortunately, I still can’t make a good pie. Sorry, Aunt Patty!
