Sadie Matthews
Shirley Ann Hayes Matthews
August 1, 1938 – November 8, 2023
Sadie was born on August 1, 1938, in Nephi, Utah to Sam and Lorraine (Sanders) Hayes. She was
the first of five children. Her siblings are Tom (Nancy); Marion Jensen (Floyd); Carolyn Bailey
(Paul) and Clyde (Linda).
Sadie grew up working at the family business Nephi Floral until she married and started her
own family. Sadie would return every spring and Memorial weekend to help prep the
greenhouses and build bountiful flower arrangements for others to enjoy.
Sadie married (Nabber) James Matthews on August 11, 1974, and lived in Grantsville, Utah. She
loved the home they lived in and the fields where they raised steers, sheep, turkeys, chickens
and some mean geese. Sadie loved to garden and had many fruit trees in the orchard. She had
a mission to cover every possible inch of earth with her produce. She enjoyed canning and
storing her harvests from the gardens to enjoy all year round.
She was a proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints and served in many
capacities including RS president. She loved to serve the many people in her ward and in Tooele
County. Around 1983 she began to volunteer for the Hospice program that was developing
here. She loved helping those in need. Sadie enjoyed playing skip-bo with many, we are sure
the ladies are sitting in heaven waiting for her to take her seat.
Sadie is survived by her husband (Nabber) James Matthews and children LeAnn (Larry)
Hammond, Brenda Mower, Allen (Debbie) Matthews and Scott (Jennifer) Matthews. Sadie has
14 grandchildren, whom she loves dearly Tamra, Amelia, Shawn, Brett, Jody, Sarah, Kevin,
Christopher, Michael, Jessica, Jason, Tyler, Dillon and Meranda. Sadie also has 15 Great-
grandchildren.
She was greeted with open arms by those who had gone before her. She longed for the day
that she could hold her four boys in her arms again that passed away at birth. Sadie is preceded
in death by her parents and siblings Tom and Marion and children Eddie, Boyd, Glade and two
unborn boys.
Mom, we love you! We will miss you, until we can hold you in our arms again!

I just want to tell Nabber, LeAnn, Brenda, Allen, and Scott how much I loved their wife and mom. She taught me so much over the years. Her gardens were always so beautiful and she always grew enough to share with lots of people. She had a wonderful sense of humor and she shared so much love for all. We had wonderful times in our childhood growing up together. Times I will forever be grateful for. Even my own children talk about their favorite place to stop on Halloween was at her house so they could get a hot home made donut.. your mom was with my mom throughout her illness and was there when she took her last breath. I’d like to think that my mom was with her when she took hers and now they are having a wonderful reunion.
My love goes out to all of you. And my prayers of comfort. It’s hard to lose a mom but it brings peace to know she lived a great life and that she is free from earthly trials. Hugs to each of you
Linda and I moved from Grantsville 16 years ago, but we never forgot our wise and caring neighbor, Sadie. We are glad we knew her and send sympathy to Navor and the rest of her family.
