Melvin Pierson DeWeese

1927 – 2023

Melvin Pierson DeWeese was born to Elmer and Edith DeWeese on March 31, 1927.  He passed away on 20 July 2023.  He was sick a lot when he was young and his mother treated him with her home-made Indian medicines.  His parents had a small piece of land where they raised produce to eat along with chickens, goats, and a cow.  At the age of 14 he got a job helping to build a house and his job was to build a fireplace and chimney.  Although he had no experience, he figured it out and got the job done.  He also had a job working from the time he got out of school each day until midnight working at a card board factory.

During high school he stared dating Abbical Frost Lillich and they were married shortly after graduating.  He was soon drafted into the army and ended up in Germany towards the end of World War 2.  On his return home he and Abbical built their first home.  It was small but full of love.

They had three children Rebecca, George, and Annette.  They moved to a larger home after their second child was born and stayed there until the children were grown.  Melvin always believed in helping others.  He led a selfless life in doing good to others. 

Melvin worked for Phillips Petroleum Refinery in Kansas City until the refinery closed.  He then worked for Service for Seniors helping the elderly that needed home repairs.  He also did home repairs as a business after working for Service for Seniors.

He lived in Kansas City most of his life, but moved to Grantsville, Utah in 2015 and lived there until his death.  He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the age of 92.  He also was involved in numerous church service projects until his health started to fail.

He is survived by his daughter Rebecca (Mike) McGivern and son George (Ann) DeWeese.  He was preceded in death by his daughter Annette Berry, and his parents Elmer & Edith DeWeese.  He has numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The Family wants to thank Jennifer his hospice nurse and Lindsay his health care provider.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 11 AM in the Grantsville West Stake Center, 115 East Cherry Street, Grantsville, Utah.  A viewing will be one hour prior to services. Military Honors will follow the funeral.

 Burial will be in Overland Park, Kansas
